Proposed privacy changes raise concerns for medical practices

In its submission on the proposed reforms, the AMA highlighted questions around privacy rules for children, patients who cannot make decisions for themselves, routine practice administration, patient communications, healthcare technology providers and data breach reporting.
The AMA also said the proposed rules need to better reflect the way healthcare is delivered today, including the use of practice software and other technology providers.
It has called for practical changes and clear guidance so doctors can meet new privacy requirements while continuing to provide safe and efficient care.
The AMA has also recommended at least 24 months for implementation. This would give practices time to review their systems, contracts, policies and consent processes.
The AMA said it will continue working with the government as the privacy reforms progress.
