Presolol 100 (labetalol) tablets shortage – approved alternatives
26 Aug 2025
Pharmaceutical company Alphaparm has reported that Presolol 100 (labetalol hydrochloride 100 mg) tablets will be in shortage until 3 October 2025 because of manufacturing problems.
The higher strength, Presolol 200 (labetalol hydrochloride 200 mg) tablets, is still available. Labetalol is a medicine used to treat all types of high blood pressure.
To make sure patients can still get their treatment, a Serious Scarcity Substitution Instrument (SSSI) will start on 26 August 2025. This allows pharmacists to give labetalol 200 mg instead of labetalol 100 mg without needing a new prescription, if it is suitable for the patient.
When substituting:
-
One tablet of Presolol 100 (100 mg) = half a tablet of Presolol 200 (200 mg)
For full details about this shortage and how substitution works, see About the shortage of Presolol 100 (labetalol hydrochloride 100 mg) tablets.
For more about SSSIs in general, see Substituting scarce medicines and Serious Scarcity Substitution Instruments (SSSIs).
