President’s Update: Key National Health Issue
17 Apr 2026
The address highlighted the role of doctors in Australia’s healthcare system and the need for stronger medical advocacy.
Australia’s health system was described as one of the best in the world, supported by strong general practice, public and private services, and high-quality clinical outcomes. However, it was also noted that the system is under significant pressure, with issues such as ambulance ramping, crowded emergency departments, and strain in private hospitals.
General practice was identified as the foundation of the health system, but concerns were raised that current Medicare funding does not reflect the complexity of modern patient care. A new seven-tier Medicare rebate structure was proposed to better support both acute and complex care delivered by GPs.
Public hospitals were also highlighted as being under ongoing strain, with overcrowding, long waiting times, and workforce burnout. While recent reforms were welcomed, it was noted that further action may still be needed to meet system demand.
The update also emphasised the growing importance of prevention, pointing out that overweight and obesity have now overtaken smoking as the leading modifiable risk factor for disease in Australia. A sugar-sweetened beverage tax was suggested as a possible prevention measure.
The President also discussed voluntary assisted dying, supporting a review of current telehealth restrictions. It was suggested that while face-to-face care remains important, some stages of consultation could safely occur via phone or video with proper safeguards.
Rising fuel prices and global conflict were also raised as emerging issues affecting healthcare, including potential supply disruptions and increased costs. The AMA is monitoring the situation and encouraging clinicians to report any impacts on services or supplies.
The update concludes by reinforcing the importance of ongoing engagement with government and the need for early collaboration to protect Australia’s healthcare system.
