Preparing for Winter: Tips for GPs from the Northern Hemisphere
01 Apr 2026
NSW can learn from Canada and the UK, which have already experienced winter. Their experience shows prevention and early planning are key to keeping people out of hospitals.
What to do now:
- Promote immunisation early, especially for people 65+
- Encourage patients to use healthdirect first for non-urgent care
- Prepare for a possible early flu season
What we might see this winter:
- RSV affects older adults more than children
- Flu may arrive early with a short, sharp peak
- COVID-19 still circulating, with lower vaccination rates
- Measles may reappear in some areas
Key message: Vaccination protects individuals and communities. Make it easy to access, communicate clearly, and start early.
