Pharmacy Care Program Expands as Victoria Marks 100,000 Patient Visits

The milestone reflects the growing use of pharmacy-based healthcare, with over 900 pharmacies now offering eligible services across Victoria. The program provides treatment for selected common conditions, giving patients another option for timely care within their local community.
Women have been the main users of the service, particularly for treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections and access to hormonal contraception. The program has also improved access for people living outside metropolitan areas, with more than one-quarter of participating pharmacies located in regional Victoria.
The range of services continues to grow. In June, pharmacists began treating acute mild musculoskeletal conditions such as minor sprains, strains and joint pain. From July, eligible women and gender-diverse people aged 18 years and over have also been able to obtain the oral contraceptive pill after a consultation with a trained pharmacist, without needing a previous prescription.
According to the Victorian Government, pharmacists delivering these services complete department-approved training and provide consultations in private rooms to ensure safe and appropriate care.
Further services are expected to be introduced in the coming months, including care for mild dermatitis and acne, as the program continues to broaden access to healthcare across the state.
