PBS expands access to hepatitis B and C medicines

From 1 September 2026, medical practitioners and authorised nurse practitioners can prescribe these medicines for eligible patients under the PBS Section 100 (s100) HSD Program. This applies to both starting and ongoing treatment, without needing prior accreditation as an s100 hepatitis B or hepatitis C prescriber.
The change follows consultation with stakeholders and is expected to improve access to treatment, particularly for people living in regional, rural and remote areas.
The usual patient and prescriber eligibility requirements under the PBS must still be met for the medicines to receive PBS subsidy.
For hepatitis C medicines listed under both the PBS and the HSD Program, the requirements in the General Statement for Drugs for the Treatment of Hepatitis C continue to apply.
Patients must also be receiving hepatitis C treatment in a hospital setting, other than as an admitted public hospital patient, to qualify for PBS-subsidised medicines under the s100 HSD Program.
