PBAC to Review PBS Access for Triptorelin in Women’s Health

Triptorelin 3.75 mg intramuscular injection (Diphereline) is currently listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for hormone-dependent advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.
The medicine is also used to treat conditions including endometriosis, uterine fibroids and some breast cancers, but these uses are not currently covered by the PBS.
Without PBS funding, patients can pay up to $264 for a monthly injection.
The special meeting follows a large number of submissions from healthcare professionals, consumer groups and individuals requesting broader PBS access.
RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman said the review comes after concerns surrounding AstraZeneca’s earlier announcement that it would discontinue the low-dose Zoladex implant in Australia.
Although AstraZeneca later confirmed it would provide the monthly 3.6 mg Zoladex implant at no cost from 1 November for patients without suitable treatment alternatives, many patients remained concerned about future treatment options.
Dr Hoffman said expanding PBS access to triptorelin would provide patients with greater treatment choice and improve confidence that an alternative medicine will remain available if supply changes occur.
She also said the issue highlighted the importance of ensuring women's health receives equal attention and that patients have access to a range of treatment options.
The RACGP has welcomed the PBAC's decision to hold an extraordinary meeting, saying it demonstrates that important healthcare issues can be reviewed more quickly while still meeting regulatory requirements.
The PBAC will consider the proposed PBS listing changes during its special meeting on 30 July.
