PBAC Recommends PBS Listing for Wegovy

PBAC Recommends PBS Listing for Wegovy

18 Mar 2026

The update follows a request from Mark Butler in 2025 to ensure fair access to obesity treatments through the PBS.

PBAC recommends a “slow and managed” rollout to make sure these medicines are used safely and by the right patients. Priority groups include:

  • People with cardiovascular disease

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with obesity-related conditions

  • Those with syndromic or medication-induced obesity

  • Patients who need weight loss before surgery

Terri-Lynne South from RACGP welcomed the decision, saying it’s a first step toward more affordable obesity treatments.

She noted price remains the biggest barrier for patients, and GPs should prepare for questions as only a small number of patients will qualify under current PBS rules.

The Government has confirmed it is negotiating the final PBS listing and pricing with the manufacturer, but a public listing could still take months.
