Orange workshop focuses on culturally safe preventive healthcare
18 Sep 2026
The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) and RACGP delivered the latest National Guide workshop as part of a 13-workshop series being held across Australia.
The workshops support the use of the National guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in local healthcare settings.
At the Orange workshop, staff from general practices and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations joined community representatives to discuss how the guidance can be applied locally.
RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Chair Dr Karen Nicholls said the workshops highlight the importance of partnerships and community-led healthcare.
She said the National Guide helps healthcare services provide prevention and early intervention that is culturally appropriate and responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The fourth edition of the National Guide was released in 2024. It was developed by NACCHO, the RACGP and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health experts from across Australia.
The guide provides practical information across 21 health topics, including child health, preconception and pregnancy care, diabetes, racism and climate change.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright described the National Guide as an important resource for GPs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, and other healthcare teams.
He said bringing healthcare professionals together allows them to share knowledge and learn from each other while supporting culturally safe care.
The Orange workshop is the halfway point of the six-month series. Workshops have already been held in Cairns, Brisbane, Melbourne, Broome and Darwin.
The next workshop is scheduled for Shepparton, Victoria, on 30 September.
