Older Australians Get More Payment Options for Aged Care Accommodation
04 Nov 2026
From 31 October, residents can choose one of three payment options while waiting for their means assessment:
- A refundable accommodation deposit, paid as an upfront lump sum.
- A daily accommodation payment.
- A combination of both payment methods.
Previously, residents waiting for their assessment could only pay through daily accommodation payments.
A means assessment helps older people understand how much they need to contribute towards their aged care costs and whether they qualify for financial hardship assistance.
Under the updated rules, aged care providers can accept any of the three payment options.
However, the amount charged cannot be higher than the agreed accommodation payment.
