Nurses recognised on International Nurses Day
12 May 2026
International Nurses Day is held each year on 12 May to mark the birthday of Florence Nightingale and to highlight the role of nurses around the world.
Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers and support patients in hospitals, community clinics, mental health services, aged care, and many other areas. They care for people during some of the most difficult and important times in their lives.
Their work includes not only direct patient care, but also leadership, teamwork, education, and advocating for patients’ needs.
Health leaders say the impact of nursing is often quiet but very important, showing up in the care, support, and reassurance nurses provide every day.
On this day, appreciation is being given to nurses for their dedication, compassion, and ongoing efforts to improve health and wellbeing in the community.
The message also highlights the theme “Empowered nurses save lives,” which focuses on the strength and contribution of nurses in the health system.
