NSW General Practice Priorities Presented to State Leaders

The discussions took place during the annual GPs for MPs campaign at Parliament House, where doctors also offered complimentary health checks to politicians. The event gave GPs an opportunity to raise issues affecting patients and general practice across the state.
Among the proposals were support for GPs with special interests, funding for a GP Liaison Officer and a pilot program to place GPs in 20 public high schools in disadvantaged areas.
Doctors also called for investment to help practices develop multidisciplinary teams, approval for trained GPs to prescribe oral isotretinoin, continued funding for intranasal influenza vaccines for children, broader access to meningococcal B, RSV and Q fever vaccines, and funding to expand after-hours GP services.
According to RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman, improving access to local healthcare and preventive services would help patients receive treatment sooner while reducing pressure on hospital emergency departments.
