New Tool Aims to Help Women Make Clearer Menopause Treatment Choices

NHMRC has announced funding for a new project called the “Supporting informed choice: MHT decision aid”. The tool is designed to reduce confusion around menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) by giving clear, evidence-based information.

The project is part of a wider $13.7 million research funding scheme, with extra support from partner organisations. It will also aim to turn research findings into practical use in healthcare settings.

The project is being led by Martha Hickey, who is Director of the Women’s Gynaecology Research Centre at the Royal Women’s Hospital and a member of the Australasian Menopause Society.

She said many women find menopause treatment choices confusing because of mixed or incomplete information. While MHT is considered the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats, it is not suitable for everyone and may carry small risks depending on the individual.

The new tool will be co-designed with women and clinicians to support shared decision-making and improve conversations between patients and healthcare providers.

This funding follows recent government action to improve menopause care, including the listing of new MHT medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Guidance published in the Australian Journal of General Practice also supports MHT as a first-line treatment for menopausal symptoms, with tailored advice from GPs.

However, some Australian women still hesitate to use MHT due to ongoing concerns based on older research.

Assistant Health Minister Rebecca White said the new tool will help women access clearer and more trusted information to support their health decisions.

She said menopause can feel confusing and isolating, and better support is needed so women can make informed choices about their care.
