New online Medicare Mental Health Check In expands with self-guided option
01 Jun 2026
Launched on 1 January 2026, the free and confidential online program is available to people aged 16 years and over living in Australia. It is designed for those experiencing stress, low mood, feeling overwhelmed or mild mental health difficulties, and does not require a referral or diagnosis.
The service uses evidence-based low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT) to support people early, before symptoms become more serious. Users can now choose how they want to engage with the program.
The self-guided option allows people to complete the program independently at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. The guided option provides additional support through telehealth sessions with a qualified mental health practitioner over several weeks, with most programs taking around six weeks to complete.
The focus of the service is to provide flexible, practical support that helps people build skills to manage everyday challenges such as stress, sleep issues, worry and low mood.
A national awareness campaign has also launched to help health professionals understand and discuss the service with patients who may benefit from early support options.
