New GPs celebrated in Cairns Fellowship ceremony

20 Apr 2026

Twenty-seven new GPs were recognised at the event last Friday, marking the first Fellowship ceremony held in Australia this year.

The event was hosted by Cath Hester, who said holding the ceremony in Cairns reflects the importance of supporting doctors in regional areas.

RACGP President Michael Wright described the occasion as an important milestone, saying Fellowship represents years of training, study, and patient care.

He said the new Fellows should be proud of their achievement and the role they will play in supporting community health across Australia, especially in regional and rural areas.

Other senior RACGP leaders, including Vice President Ramya Raman and former Presidents Nicole Higgins and Claire Jackson, also attended the ceremony.

Dr Hester said the new Fellows are ready to make a real difference in their communities and described general practice as a “uniquely rewarding career”
