New 10-Year Child Health Study Targets Obesity and Heart Disease

The project, called GenHEART, will run four major trials focused on blood pressure, weight, physical activity, and sleep. It is designed to better understand how early-life habits affect long-term health and how to prevent chronic disease later in life.

The four trials include:

  • Checking blood pressure in primary school children to reduce future heart disease risk
  • Supporting families where parents have obesity to help improve household health habits
  • Changing school physical activity programs to build strength and improve fitness
  • Adjusting children’s bedtime routines to study effects on weight and mental health

Researchers say childhood risk factors like poor diet, low activity, poor sleep, and high blood pressure often begin early and can continue into adulthood if not addressed.

Experts involved in the study say early prevention is important because cardiovascular disease remains one of Australia’s most common health problems.

A general practitioner involved in the project said GPs will play a key role in identifying and managing children with high blood pressure and supporting families through follow-up care.

The study will also connect schools, families, and health services to ensure children identified with health concerns are referred to appropriate care, including general practice.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners will support the project by helping shape how findings are used in primary care.

Researchers hope the findings will be used in future routine health checks and prevention programs across Australia.
