National survey seeks GP insights into breastfeeding care

National survey seeks GP insights into breastfeeding care

22 Oct 2026

Dr Kavita Thanakrishnan, Chair of the RACGP Specific Interests Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine group, is leading the national study. The survey aims to provide a clearer picture of how breastfeeding medicine is taught and practised in general practice.

As GPs are often the first point of contact for postpartum support, the findings could help identify training needs, referral challenges and areas where patient care could improve. Results will be provided to the Senate Select Committee on Women’s Health.

The anonymous survey takes around five to ten minutes to complete. It asks GPs about their training, breastfeeding-related consultations, referral options and the outcomes they observe when patients receive insufficient support.

The ethics-approved survey is open to all currently practising Australian GPs until Friday, 6 November 2026.
