National Pain Alliance Calls for Chronic Pain to Be a National Health Priority
16 Apr 2026
The alliance says chronic pain affects about 20% of Australians and is becoming a major health and economic issue. It was launched at Parliament House in Canberra and is led by Chronic Pain Australia, along with groups such as Endometriosis Australia, MS Australia, Arthritis Australia, and Wounds Australia.
The group says the cost of chronic pain could rise to more than $215 billion a year by 2050 if it is not better managed.
Nicolette Ellis said the health system has not given enough attention to chronic pain, even though it affects millions of people.
She said many Australians are unable to work, study, or take part in daily life because of ongoing pain, and this also places pressure on families and the health system.
The alliance has set three main goals:
- Recognising chronic pain as a national health priority
- Improving data collection and research
- Strengthening access to better, evidence-based care
A recent National Pain Report found long delays in diagnosis are common. More than half of people wait over two years, and many wait even longer.
It also found that many patients struggle with work, financial pressure, and mental health problems linked to ongoing pain.
For children, the impact can be severe, with many missing school and falling behind in learning.
Teenager Laura McMahon shared her experience, saying chronic pain can feel isolating and often misunderstood, especially when symptoms are not visible.
The alliance says it will now work with governments, health experts, and community groups to improve awareness, data, and support for people living with chronic pain across Australia.
