My Health Record to Automatically Receive Most Pathology and Imaging Reports from July 2026

22 Jun 2026

From this date, most written pathology and diagnostic imaging reports produced by or on behalf of pathologists and radiologists will be uploaded automatically to My Health Record unless an exception applies. Diagnostic images themselves are not included in the requirement.

The changes are intended to improve access to health information for both patients and healthcare providers, supporting more coordinated and continuous care across different healthcare settings.

Under the new system, healthcare providers will still be able to access reports through their usual clinical software. However, more results will also be available in My Health Record, including reports from different providers involved in a patient’s care.

Patients may also be able to view some of their test results before follow-up appointments, depending on how and when reports are released.

Clinicians are being encouraged to discuss report sharing and follow-up arrangements with patients at the time tests are ordered. Guidance materials are also being made available to support these conversations, particularly around understanding and interpreting results.

There are specific situations where reports may not be uploaded. These include cases where a patient does not have a My Health Record, where a patient requests non-upload, or where a clinician believes sharing the information could pose a serious risk to the patient’s health, safety, or wellbeing. Technical issues or other system limitations may also prevent upload in some cases.

Healthcare organisations will be required to keep records of any exceptions for at least two years. Other exemptions may apply under privacy laws, approved extensions, or where certain types of reports are not required to be shared.
