More GP training opportunities announced for 2028

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) will receive funding for another 87 training places, bringing its total to 1,627 positions in 2028. Of the additional places, 37 will support rural training.

Together with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), the RACGP’s allocation forms part of a national total of 2,100 GP training places announced for 2028.

The announcement comes as preparations continue for the next group of GP trainees. The RACGP has already filled all available positions for its 2027 training intake.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright welcomed the additional places, saying a larger training intake would help more doctors care for patients across Australia.

He said rural training was particularly important because doctors who train in these communities are more likely to continue working there.

Dr Wright also noted that RACGP training numbers had grown by 40% over the past two years, with strong interest continuing among junior doctors seeking to specialise in general practice.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin also welcomed the funding. He said at least half of the new national training allocation would be dedicated to rural GP and Rural Generalist training, supporting growing demand for these pathways.

The college said it looked forward to working with the Government to create more training opportunities in areas with the greatest need.

Earlier in the year, the RACGP secured a five-year Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) agreement worth $751.3 million to deliver the program.

The number of doctors entering the AGPT program also reached a new high in 2026. A total of 1,772 doctors joined, almost 19% more than the 1,507 who entered in 2025.

Federal Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler said the funding was intended to increase the number of GPs training and working in communities across Australia.

He said the investment would also support access to affordable, high-quality healthcare through Medicare.
