More GP Trainees Start in Canberra, But More Support Needed

13 Apr 2026

A total of 29 doctors have started training through the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program in Canberra. This is a 26% increase compared to last year. However, another 18 eligible applicants missed out due to limited training spots.

The increase comes at a time when Canberra has the lowest number of GPs per person among Australia’s capital cities, with around 23% fewer GPs than cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

The RACGP says while the growth is a positive step, more investment is needed to train and retain future GPs. Suggested measures include better support for GP supervisors, financial incentives to keep trainees in Canberra, and help with exam costs.

These changes aim to grow the GP workforce, reduce pressure on hospitals, and improve access to care for the community.

Across Australia, 1,772 doctors are now training to become specialist GPs through the AGPT program, marking a 19% increase from last year.
