Men’s Health Needs More Focus Before Pregnancy
30 Mar 2026
Experts say GPs can help men play a bigger role in preconception and antenatal care.
The review found that men’s health is still treated as a “secondary consideration” in research, policy, and healthcare practice. From sperm health to post-birth parenting, men are too often overlooked.
Dr Ka-Kiu Cheung from RACGP said GPs can encourage shared responsibility for pregnancy and parenting. With around 40% of pregnancies in Australia unplanned, many men miss the chance to prepare for conception.
The study also highlights that lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, weight, and medication use can affect sperm health and pregnancy outcomes. “Male preconception health really matters,” Dr Cheung said.
