This has sparked calls for higher Medicare rebates for longer GP appointments that involve more complex care.

Female GPs spend an average of 21 minutes with each patient, compared with 18 minutes for male GPs. This difference has raised questions about whether current Medicare payments properly recognise the time needed to provide quality care.

A draft report from the Medicare Review Advisory Committee (MRAC) has considered changes to consultation rebates. The proposal recommends increased Medicare rebates for longer consultations, covering Levels C to E.

The RACGP has proposed a 40% increase in Medicare rebates for GP visits that exceed 20 minutes. It believes the funding system should better recognise the time doctors need to care for patients.

The consultation on the proposed changes closes on 15 October.
