Measles warning issued for Sutherland Shire
08 May 2026
The person visited several locations across the area while unknowingly infectious, including healthcare facilities. NSW Health has published a list of exposure sites and times on its website and says the locations do not pose an ongoing risk.
People who were at these locations during the listed times are being asked to monitor for symptoms for up to 18 days after exposure.
NSW Health says pregnant women, infants, and people with weakened immune systems who may have been exposed within the past six days should urgently contact their local Public Health Unit.
There has been an increase in measles cases across NSW this year, with 47 confirmed cases recorded since 1 January 2026.
South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Physician Dr Anthea Katelaris said people should seek medical advice if they develop symptoms after visiting any exposure sites.
She advised anyone with symptoms to call ahead before visiting a GP clinic, hospital, or emergency department to avoid exposing others in waiting rooms.
Early measles symptoms include fever, sore or watery eyes, runny nose, and cough. A red, blotchy rash usually appears a few days later and spreads from the face to the rest of the body.
Health authorities say people with symptoms should get tested, even if they did not visit one of the listed exposure locations.
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, but it can be prevented with vaccination.
NSW Health is reminding the community to check they are up to date with their measles vaccinations, especially before overseas travel.
Anyone born after 1965 should have received two doses of the measles vaccine. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is free in NSW for eligible people and is available through GPs and pharmacies for people over five years old.
Parents travelling overseas with children under 12 months are advised to speak with their GP about an early MMR vaccine dose.
