International Day of the Midwife: Honouring Essential Caregivers
05 May 2026
The day highlights the work of midwives in providing safe and high-quality care during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Their services include clinical care, family planning support, and health screening, all of which contribute to healthier mothers and children.
Midwives work in a range of settings, including hospitals, emergency situations and community care. They often provide continuity of care during challenging circumstances and are recognised for their resilience, leadership and adaptability.
The day also acknowledges maternity support workers and midwifery teams who work alongside other healthcare professionals to care for families in a wide range of situations.
Health services across Australia are using the occasion to thank midwives for their dedication and ongoing contribution to maternal and newborn health, as well as to reflect on this year’s theme, “One Million More Midwives.”
