Hearing Services Program Recognises New Restricted Scope Audiologist Categories

Practitioners in these categories have recognised overseas audiology qualifications and work within a restricted scope of practice. They can apply for a Qualified Practitioner (QP) number, allowing them to provide eligible services under the Hearing Services Program.
Under the updated arrangements, Restricted Scope Audiologists have a scope of practice equivalent to an Audiometrist. This means specific rules apply when claiming certain assessment and case management services.
To ensure their records are updated, eligible practitioners or their service providers must notify the Hearing Services Program by providing the practitioner's Qualified Practitioner number and a current professional membership certificate. Once verified, the practitioner's classification will be updated in the Hearing Services Online Portal.
The revised Schedule of Service Items and Fees 2026–27 now includes separate definitions for Audiometrists, Audiologists and Restricted Scope Audiologists. It also outlines how the new practitioner category applies to assessment, reassessment and audiological case management services.
The Department has clarified that items 610 and 810 may only be claimed by a Qualified Practitioner Audiologist who provides clinical advice to support an Audiometrist or Restricted Scope Audiologist during an assessment or reassessment of a non-routine client. These items cannot be claimed by Audiometrists or Restricted Scope Audiologists and cannot be billed as standalone services.
Providers are encouraged to review their claiming processes, update staff about the new requirements and correct any claims that do not comply with the revised Schedule. The Department has advised that incorrect claims may result in payment recovery or other compliance action under the Hearing Services Program.
