H5N1 Human Health Risk Remains Low, Experts Say

Researchers from the CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) say there have been no human cases linked to the current Australian outbreak.

H5N1 was first detected in Australia in June, after the virus was found in a brown skua in Western Australia. Authorities are now taking steps to protect native birds, including plans to vaccinate captive birds and thousands of little penguins in Victoria.

ACDP experts say GPs should consider a patient’s exposure history if they develop flu-like symptoms after contact with sick or infected birds.

People who work closely with wild birds, poultry or other potentially infected animals are considered more likely to come into contact with the virus.

Experts say most human H5N1 infections reported overseas have caused mild respiratory symptoms or conjunctivitis. More serious cases have been uncommon.

There is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission from the Australian outbreak.

ACDP researchers say the virus remains mainly adapted to birds, although ongoing testing is important to identify any genetic changes that could affect its behaviour.

People working in high-risk environments are also encouraged to receive the standard seasonal influenza vaccine. While it does not prevent H5N1 infection, it may help reduce the chance of being infected with seasonal influenza at the same time.

A recent UK study of people exposed to H5N1-infected birds also found a low rate of human infection. Fewer than 1% of participants met the study’s criteria for infection, and no severe illness was reported.

Experts say continued surveillance, protective equipment and careful management of exposure remain important as Australia responds to the outbreak.
