GPs promote flu protection at Queensland Parliament
24 Apr 2026
Doctors from RACGP Queensland, including Chair Dr Cath Hester, took part in the event to support public health efforts and encourage simple steps to reduce the spread of seasonal influenza.
The pop-up clinic was held at Parliament House, where GPs answered questions and vaccinated people throughout the day.
The event also aimed to set an example for communities by encouraging parliamentarians to take part in preventive health measures.
Dr Hester said the initiative helped raise awareness about flu prevention and the important role GPs play in keeping people healthy.
She highlighted that GPs lead vaccination efforts each year and provide ongoing care that supports better health outcomes.
The campaign comes ahead of World Immunisation Week and follows concerns about falling vaccination rates.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, last year recorded 1,701 flu-related deaths and more than 500,000 confirmed cases.
Dr Michael Wright described 2025 as a severe flu year, which increased pressure on hospitals.
RACGP Queensland hopes to improve awareness this year and encourage more people to get vaccinated.
The event was organised by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in partnership with CSL Seqirus.
