GPs call for better understanding of alcohol and drug stigma
18 May 2026
A new campaign called “Raise It”, launched by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, is focusing on real experiences from clinicians working in addiction and primary care.
The campaign includes several GPs, including addiction medicine specialist Dr Eric Hadinata, who said stigma in healthcare settings can lead to delayed treatment and poorer patient outcomes.
He shared an example where a patient with heroin dependence experienced repeated hospital visits but was not prioritised early, later being diagnosed with a serious spinal infection.
Dr Hadinata said the experience made him reflect on how unconscious bias can influence clinical decision-making, even without direct intention.
He said substance use disorders should be treated like other chronic health conditions, and compared current stigma to how mental health was viewed in the past.
While he believes progress is being made, he said more work is needed to change attitudes within the health system.
The Raise It campaign aims to encourage health professionals to improve their understanding of AOD issues, take up further training, and support non-judgemental care in everyday practice.
Organisers are also encouraging GPs to raise discussions about alcohol and drug use with patients in a supportive and respectful way.
Dr Hadinata said substance use affects people across all backgrounds and urged clinicians to approach care from a public health perspective.
Resources and education tools on alcohol and other drug care are available through the RACGP.
