GPs call for a stronger voice in Australia’s health system

The result reflects concerns that GPs, who work closely with patients and understand how different parts of the health system connect, are not always involved enough in major policy and service decisions.

South Australian GP Dr Emily Kirkpatrick said GPs have an important role in helping patients navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system and choose appropriate services.

She believes GPs should have more opportunities to contribute directly to health policy, particularly within state and territory health departments where many major changes are developed.

Dr Kirkpatrick said having experienced clinicians involved in government health structures could help connect primary care with hospitals and other parts of the health system.

During her previous work, including as South Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, she helped develop stronger links between primary health networks, state health services and GPs.

She said closer collaboration between primary and acute care could support better outcomes across the health system.

Dr Kirkpatrick is encouraging GPs to become more involved in governance and leadership positions, including health service boards, primary health networks and RACGP advocacy committees.

She also highlighted the RACGP Future Leaders Program as an opportunity for GPs interested in developing their leadership and advocacy skills.

Applications are currently open to eligible current FRACGPs with at least three years of Fellowship. Applications close on 1 September.
