GPs at the Centre of Care: President’s Update Covers Digital Health, Diphtheria and Specialist Fees
22 May 2026
The AMA President used the week to thank family doctors, saying they remain central to the health system by providing ongoing care from birth through to older age, helping patients stay healthier and reducing unnecessary hospital visits.
The update also reflected on a busy week in Melbourne at the Digital Health Festival, where new digital health tools and artificial intelligence were a major focus. While these technologies were seen as promising, concerns were raised about patient safety, consent, and the risk of fragmented care if systems are not well connected.
Attention also turned to a diphtheria outbreak across Australia, described as the largest in decades. With more than 200 cases reported and one death confirmed, health leaders stressed the importance of vaccination and early protection. Efforts are underway to support affected communities, particularly in Indigenous regions, and to encourage open conversations between patients and GPs about immunisation.
The update also addressed ongoing debate around specialist medical fees. The AMA defended doctors, saying most charge at or below recommended rates, and explained that rising patient costs are linked to the growing gap between Medicare rebates and the real cost of providing care.
Doctors also highlighted high practice expenses, including insurance, staffing and rent, which can total hundreds of thousands of dollars before patient care even begins.
Discussions were also held with government representatives about transparency in medical cost reporting and reforms to the Medical Cost Finder website, with a focus on ensuring accurate and fair information for patients.
Finally, broader health system meetings covered reforms in primary care, urgent care centres, mental health programs, workforce planning and consumer research showing most Australians regularly see a GP and value having a usual family doctor.
The AMA reaffirmed its commitment to improving access, supporting doctors and ensuring patients continue to receive high-quality, affordable care.
