Over three days, seven teams of participants will brainstorm and prototype innovative solutions to real healthcare problems. This year, 51 participants are taking part, supported by mentors, subject experts, and facilitators.

Opening the event, RACGP Specific Interests – Digital Health and Innovation Chair Dr Sean Stevens encouraged teams to push their limits. “You’ll be challenged, you’ll be stretched and I genuinely hope you will surprise yourselves,” he said. He highlighted that tools such as AI, data, and digital platforms give GPs unprecedented opportunities to improve patient care.

Participants immediately began collaborating in breakout rooms, developing ideas that will be presented to a judging panel on Sunday. Judges include RACGP President Dr Michael Wright, Vice President Dr Ramya Raman, GP and Healthengine founder Dr Marcus Tan, and Penny Shakespeare from the Federal Health Department.

While there will be a winning team, the event’s biggest benefit is the experience and skills participants will bring back to their practices. Mornington GP registrar Dr Louis‑Philippe Delaugere said the Hackathon allowed him to focus on solutions rather than daily problems, giving him a broader perspective on healthcare improvement.

Dr Johanna Bonilla, a Chief Medical Information Officer from Canada, also joined the event, noting her admiration for the Australian healthcare system and her excitement to learn from local GPs.

The RACGP Hackathon continues to highlight the power of collaboration between medicine and technology, aiming to create practical, innovative solutions for primary care.
