GPs Advised to Review HIV Treatment Options Following Medicine Discontinuation

he medicine has been unavailable since March 2025. To help maintain access, the TGA has approved the temporary supply of an overseas-registered equivalent containing efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate until 31 January 2027.

While other tenofovir disoproxil/emtricitabine (PrEP) medicines and alternative treatment options remain available, efavirenz is not marketed as a separate product in Australia. The TGA recommends healthcare professionals consider suitable alternative treatments based on each patient's individual needs.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) has also reminded prescribers that the six-month grandfathering arrangements under the Medicinal Cannabis Framework will end on 31 August. GPs caring for eligible Veteran Card holders using medicinal cannabis should review treatment plans before the deadline to ensure ongoing eligibility for DVA-funded treatment.

In addition, healthcare professionals are reminded that early bird registrations close on 19 July for the General Practice in Addiction (GPADD) Conference, which will be held in Melbourne on 28–29 August and offers 18.5 CPD hours.
