GP Practices Urged to Register for SMS Sender ID to Avoid Message Disruption

28 May 2026

From 1 July, any unregistered sender IDs will be marked as “Unverified” and will appear differently in message threads, which could affect how patients receive appointment reminders, test results and other clinic communications.

The new register is part of the Federal Government’s Fighting Scams initiative, aimed at reducing SMS impersonation scams and improving trust in digital communications across health, aged care and disability services.

Practices are being advised to complete registration as soon as possible through the Australian Communications and Media Authority to maintain uninterrupted branded messaging to patients and families.

The update is designed to make SMS communications safer and more secure for both healthcare providers and patients.

In the same update for general practice, registrars are being reminded that applications for the 2027 Academic Post Program close on 6 July.

The program offers a 12-month, part-time opportunity for GP registrars to gain experience in research and teaching through university departments of general practice.

RACGP Awards nominations are also closing soon, with members encouraged to nominate colleagues for their contributions to general practice, education and patient care.
