GP Mental Health Treatment Plans: Key Referral Rules Explained

GP Mental Health Treatment Plans: Key Referral Rules Explained

28 Apr 2026

GP referrals to psychologists must clearly state the number of sessions. This helps prevent confusion and avoids delays in patients starting care. If the number of sessions is not included, psychologists need to contact the GP, which can slow down treatment and increase admin work.

Patients can continue using the same Mental Health Treatment Plan over time. GPs can also update the original plan when needed.

Each calendar year (1 January to 31 December), patients may access:

  • Up to 10 individual Medicare-rebated mental health sessions for psychological therapy or focused psychological strategies
  • Up to 10 group therapy sessions with 4 to 10 people

Any unused sessions can be carried over into the next year.
