GP Hub Hits Milestone in Supporting Eating Disorder Care

09 Apr 2026

Launched less than two years ago, the InsideOut Institute’s GP Hub now has 6,484 users nationwide, including 3,541 GPs. The high uptake reflects growing awareness that people with eating disorders often first present indirectly in general practice, making identification tools vital, says Dr Karen Spielman, GP and Chair of the GP Hub Advisory Group.

‘It’s amazing to see these numbers,’ Dr Spielman said. ‘Having about 9% of GPs signed up shows how important and useful this tool is.’

The next stage of the project is an evaluation phase, which will ask GPs a few short questions about confidence when using the Hub. Feedback will also be collected via a button on the platform. Insights from GPs across different settings will help improve usability, refine clinical pathways, and ensure the Hub works efficiently within standard consultations.

Dr Spielman, who also chairs the RACGP Specific Interests Psychological Medicine, notes that eating disorders can be hidden in general practice and referral pathways are not always clear. GPs often face challenges such as not knowing how to manage a patient or who else to involve in care.

‘By working in a multidisciplinary team, GPs can manage patients with eating disorders more effectively. This is a complex condition that needs a team approach,’ she said.

With over one million Australians living with an eating disorder, general practice is often the first point of care. The GP Hub toolkit provides GPs with desktop access to protocols, templates, and resources to make identifying, managing, and coordinating treatment easier, including help with Medicare rebates and care plans.

The Hub recently received Federal Government funding to continue and expand over the next two years. This support will help the platform evolve with GP needs, clinical evidence, and national care pathways.

‘By reducing barriers for patients and GPs, we can identify people earlier, manage them sooner, and improve outcomes,’ Dr Spielman said. ‘GPs have a huge capacity to make a difference, and the GP Hub makes it easier for them to do so.’
