Government Moves to Secure Future of the NDIS
22 Apr 2026
Officials warn that the program is growing faster than similar schemes, which could affect its long-term stability.
To address this, the government has outlined a plan built on four main areas. These include cracking down on fraud, slowing the rise in costs, tightening eligibility rules, and improving the quality of services for participants.
A new law, the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill, will be introduced after the 2026–27 Budget is released.
The reforms are based on recommendations from the Independent Review into the NDIS and the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. These changes are part of ongoing efforts to improve how the system works.
The government says further reforms will still be needed in the long term to make sure the NDIS can continue supporting people with disability and their families. It also says it will keep working with the disability community and sector on future changes.
