Government Accused of Delaying Release of Key Gambling and Diabetes Reports
28 May 2026
The reports responded to parliamentary inquiries into online gambling harms and the national state of diabetes in Australia. Both were published long after the original inquiries were handed down, with delays of more than 1,000 days for the gambling report and nearly 700 days for the diabetes report.
The AMA said releasing the documents on Budget day appeared to limit public and media attention on issues described as significant public health concerns.
The gambling inquiry, led by the late MP Peta Murphy, highlighted the growing impact of online gambling harm in Australia. The diabetes report examined the rising burden of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes across the country.
The AMA said delays in responding to these inquiries have occurred while gambling losses have continued to grow and diabetes-related deaths have remained high.
It also said the government’s responses did not fully address the recommendations made in either report, particularly around stronger prevention measures.
For gambling reform, the AMA noted that while some measures have been introduced, including partial advertising restrictions and improved protections for young people, they fall short of the inquiry’s full recommendations.
On diabetes, the AMA said more action is needed, including stronger prevention strategies such as improved food labelling, restrictions on marketing unhealthy foods to children, and a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.
The AMA also confirmed its participation in a preventive health roundtable at Parliament House focused on reducing unhealthy food marketing to children and exploring a levy on sugary drinks.
