Free Training Gives GPs New Tools to Improve Men's Health Outcomes

The Movember Institute has introduced Men in Mind for Primary Care, a free online learning program designed to strengthen communication between healthcare professionals and male patients. The course has received RACGP accreditation and is available for GPs and Rural Generalists as part of their continuing professional development.
The program focuses on practical consultation skills rather than clinical treatment alone. Participants learn how social expectations, communication styles and trust can influence whether men seek medical advice, discuss sensitive health concerns or return for follow-up care.
The training was developed with input from researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience. It includes practical strategies to help GPs recognise when patients may be downplay symptoms, avoid discussing health concerns or disengage from ongoing care.
According to Dr Alex Romain, Chair of RACGP Specific Interests Men's Health, improving communication during consultations can play an important role in addressing the poorer health outcomes experienced by many Australian men. He said providing doctors with practical guidance supports earlier intervention and encourages ongoing engagement with healthcare.
The education package expands Movember's existing professional learning platform, which previously focused on mental health practitioners. New versions have also been created for pharmacists and primary care nurses to encourage a consistent approach across primary care services.
Ben Rogers, Movember's Health Systems Global Director, said understanding the influence of social and cultural expectations on men's health behaviours can help practitioners identify barriers that may prevent patients from seeking help or continuing treatment.
The Australian Government has committed $11.3 million to expand the program nationally through Primary Health Networks, supporting broader access to the training across Australia.
The self-paced course provides 2.5 RACGP CPD hours, including two hours of Educational Activities and 30 minutes of Reviewing Performance.
