The program is available to people aged 16 years and over living in Australia and does not require a GP referral, mental health diagnosis or Australian citizenship to access.
The service uses Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT) to help people build practical skills for managing common mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety and low mood. Participants complete online self-guided activities and can choose additional support from a qualified mental health practitioner through telehealth if needed.
The program helps people develop skills to:
- Manage stress and anxiety
- Improve low mood
- Overcome fears
- Solve everyday problems
- Build healthier thinking habits
- Improve sleep
- Maintain long-term mental wellbeing
Qualified practitioners delivering the service include psychologists, counsellors, social workers, occupational therapists and registered nurses who are trained in Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Health professionals are encouraged to recommend the service to patients experiencing mild mental health symptoms who may benefit from early support.
However, the program is not suitable for people with moderate to severe mental illness or those experiencing a mental health crisis. Individuals needing more intensive care will be directed to more appropriate mental health services.
People can access the service by calling Medicare Mental Health on 1800 595 212 or visiting the Medicare Mental Health Check In website, where they will be assessed and connected with the most appropriate support.
The Australian Government has also developed translated resources and educational materials to help make the service accessible to people from diverse communities.
