FOGO Rules Coming to NSW: What Aged Care Homes Need to Know
07 Apr 2026
From July 2026, larger businesses and facilities that produce a lot of food waste will start moving to food-only waste services. This rollout will continue in stages until 2030.
For RACHs, this means separating food waste from general waste and using a dedicated collection service. This includes items like fruit and vegetable scraps, leftover meals, and other food waste, depending on local council rules.
You will need to follow NSW Environment Protection Authority guidelines to sort waste correctly and avoid contamination.
Councils will provide FOGO bins and guidance. Existing options like composting or worm farms can still be used.
Businesses that do not follow the rules may face fines of up to $500,000, plus daily penalties for ongoing breaches.
More details will be shared by local councils as the rollout gets closer.
