Flu Deaths in Australia Hit New High

25 Feb 2026

The highest number this century, according to the ABS. Flu deaths even surpassed COVID-19 in recent months, showing the virus is still a serious threat.

ABS figures show 1,701 flu-related deaths in 2025, compared with 1,045 in 2024 and 611 in 2023. Numbers dipped slightly in November but rose again in December, staying well above normal.

Dr Rod Pearce, GP and Chair of the Immunisation Coalition, said the figures are a warning.

“Flu is dangerous. It can make existing illnesses worse, cause heart problems, and increase frailty in older people,” he said.

While COVID-19 deaths fell to 2,161 in 2025, flu deaths remained high, including 95 in November and 119 in December. Experts say low vaccination rates and confusion about respiratory illnesses are contributing factors.
