Face-to-Face with MPs: NT GPs Make Their Case

16 Mar 2026

Almost every MP met one-on-one with a local GP to discuss the realities of running clinics, challenges in primary care, and what support is needed.

Dr Sam Heard called the event “amazing,” noting that several MPs spent up to an hour with GPs. Some advisers also joined to better understand general practice.

The discussions covered issues such as Medicare, bulk-billing incentives, and the unique challenges faced by GPs working in remote and regional communities.

NT Health Minister Steve Edgington said the event gave MPs a real insight into the vital role GPs play in the healthcare system – from clinics to hospitals and aeromedical services – and how they help reduce pressure on hospitals.

The NT event is part of the RACGP’s ongoing GPs@Parliament campaign, which has been rolled out across Australia to strengthen GP advocacy.
