Experts Call for Regular Reviews of Long-Term Antidepressant Use
04 Jun 2026
A new clinical overview published in the Australian Journal of General Practice examined the risks and benefits of continuing antidepressants over extended periods and found limited evidence supporting long-term use for most people.
The authors argue that some studies may have mistaken withdrawal symptoms for a return of depression, potentially overstating the medicines’ ability to prevent relapse.
Nearly four million Australians used antidepressants during 2024–25, with GPs responsible for prescribing the majority of these medications.
Researchers say long-term antidepressant use, generally beyond 12 months, is not recommended for most patients. However, many people remain on the medicines for years, often because withdrawal symptoms can make stopping difficult.
The review highlights that symptoms such as anxiety, low mood and sleep problems can occur during withdrawal, making it challenging to distinguish them from a recurrence of depression.
Experts are encouraging GPs to regularly review antidepressant treatment with patients and discuss whether continuing, reducing or stopping the medication is appropriate based on individual circumstances.
The article also points to growing evidence of possible long-term side effects, including weight gain, sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, cognitive changes and increased health risks in older adults.
Researchers advise that anyone considering stopping antidepressants should do so under medical supervision, with doses reduced gradually over time to help lower the risk of withdrawal symptoms.
The review highlights the important role of GPs in supporting patients through ongoing mental health care and informed treatment decisions.
