Crazy Socks Day Highlights Importance of Doctors’ Mental Health

While the event brings a fun and light-hearted atmosphere, its message is serious: doctors should feel safe to speak up about their mental health and seek support when they need it.
Founded by Dr Geoff Toogood, the campaign encourages open conversations about wellbeing and aims to reduce the stigma that can stop healthcare workers from asking for help. This year's launch took place in Launceston, alongside Dr Toby Gardner.
Dr Toogood said creating a healthcare system where doctors feel comfortable discussing their wellbeing is essential. He emphasised the importance of ensuring medical professionals know they can seek help without fear of judgement.
The campaign comes at a time when many doctors are facing increasing workplace pressures. According to the RACGP’s Health of the Nation report, 69% of GPs reported experiencing burnout in 2025, while fewer than half felt they had a healthy work–life balance.
Ahead of Crazysocks4docs Day, the RACGP encouraged politicians across Australia to support efforts aimed at improving mental health awareness and reducing barriers to care for doctors.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said doctors play a vital role in supporting the health of their communities but often struggle to prioritise their own wellbeing. He said healthcare workers should feel supported, valued, and able to access help when needed.
The annual campaign continues to promote a simple message for the medical profession: seeking support is a sign of strength, and no doctor should feel alone when facing mental health challenges.
