A conference hosted by South Western Sydney Primary Health Network (SWSPHN) has brought together healthcare professionals to discuss how general practices can remain sustainable as the sector faces growing challenges.

Held on 18 October 2026 at The William Inglis Hotel in Warwick Farm, the event, Future-proofing general practice: a deep dive on viability and sustainability, attracted 59 GPs, practice managers and general practice staff.

The event opened with an Acknowledgement of Country delivered by Uncle Tony Scholes, Chair of the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Discussions focused on key issues affecting general practices across South Western Sydney, including staff shortages, burnout, financial pressures and an ageing GP workforce.

The program included presentations and practical sessions on artificial intelligence (AI), workplace management, leadership, staff development and Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) billing.

Macquarie University AI lecturer Greg Baker discussed how AI is influencing patient behaviour and clinical care. His presentation explored how practices can respond to emerging technology while supporting safe patient care.

Separate sessions addressed the needs of GPs, practice managers and other practice staff.

Eden Elliott-Griggs from Wise Workplace Training covered employment relationships, including recruitment, retaining staff, workplace responsibilities and managing employee performance.

Kim Poyner, director of MediCoach, discussed leadership, managing change and developing stronger practice teams. Other sessions explored how digital workflows, practice data and succession planning can improve efficiency and help practices prepare for the future.

Financial management was another major focus. Primary care consultant and MBS specialist Wendy O’Meara led sessions on identifying billing opportunities, understanding MBS requirements and maintaining accurate, compliant billing practices.

The conference gave attendees the opportunity to build their knowledge, exchange experiences and consider practical ways to improve the resilience and efficiency of their practices.

SWSPHN said its work to support general practices with business management, workforce planning and digital health strategies aims to help maintain a strong primary healthcare system for communities across South Western Sydney.
