Clear Communication Helps Families Navigate Early Childhood Care
13 Oct 2026
A new update from South Western Sydney Primary Health Network highlights the importance of matching health information to each family’s level of understanding.
Health literacy is the ability to find, understand and use health information to make informed decisions. Clinicians should adjust how they communicate to meet the needs of parents and carers.
Translated resources can help families who are not confident communicating in English, but clinicians should check whether the information has been understood. One way to do this is the teach-back method, which asks people to explain the information in their own words.
The update also highlights how family and social networks can influence the use of health advice. Following up with families can help clinicians identify misunderstandings and provide better support.
