Changes coming to Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department access

08 May 2026

From Friday, 15 May 2026, the footpath on the hospital side of Argyle Street will be closed between the pedestrian lights and Liverpool Street while construction continues. A safe work zone has been set up and the hospital will stay open during this time.

In the coming weeks, traffic changes will also happen on Argyle Street. This includes some overnight closures of the right-hand lane while work is carried out for a new ambulance zone and public drop-off area.

By mid-2026, the right-hand lane between the pedestrian lights and Liverpool Street will be closed to general traffic and used only for ambulances going to the ED.

Once the new entrance is finished, the Emergency Department will move to Argyle Street. After this, all ED access will be through the new entrance only, and the current ED and Liverpool Street area will be redeveloped.

A construction area for deliveries and storage is already set up on Liverpool Street between Campbell and Argyle Streets.

The expanded Emergency Department is expected to increase space, modernise facilities, reduce waiting times, and improve care for patients and visitors. Construction on the Liverpool Street side is expected to take around two years.
