Calls Grow for Free Meningococcal B Vaccine After UK Outbreak

08 Apr 2026

Health authorities in the UK have reported 21 cases linked to a nightclub, including two deaths and several patients needing intensive care. The outbreak has raised concerns about the risk of meningococcal B spreading more widely.

In Australia, the issue has also been highlighted by the death of a 16-year-old in Victoria last year after contracting the infection.

RACGP Victoria Chair Dr Anita Muñoz said meningococcal B is a fast-moving and dangerous infection that can cause death or severe disability within a short time. She said expanding free access to vaccines would help protect children and reduce pressure on hospitals and GP clinics.

Currently, the meningococcal B vaccine, Bexsero, is only funded under the National Immunisation Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children under two and people at higher risk. Many Victorian families must pay out of pocket for the full course.

The RACGP is also calling for free access to the intranasal flu vaccine for children, saying it could improve vaccination rates and reduce the spread of illness in schools and early learning settings.

Experts say funding these vaccines would help prevent serious illness, reduce hospitalisations, and ease pressure on the healthcare system.
