Big Study Finds Medicinal Cannabis Doesn’t Help Most Mental Health Issues
17 Mar 2026
The large analysis looked at data from 54 clinical trials carried out between 1980 and 2025 and included nearly 2,500 people.
Researchers said this is the biggest review so far on whether cannabis‑based medicines work for mental health issues, but they did not find evidence that cannabis helps with anxiety, depression or PTSD.
While there were some signs that cannabis might help a few other conditions — such as tics in Tourette’s, autism, insomnia, or helping people with cannabis use disorder the quality of this evidence was weak and not strong enough to prove it works well.
Experts warned that using cannabis for mental health without good evidence could delay better treatments that are known to work. Some doctors are urging more high‑quality research and better checks on how cannabis medicines are prescribed.
